DeepSeek ramps up hiring and infrastructure spending after reportedly raising 50 billion yuan

Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is stepping up recruitment for data center construction and AI-powered coding tools, signaling an ambitious expansion into both computing infrastructure and commercial applications following reports of a major fundraising round.

The company, which has become one of China’s most closely watched AI developers, has recently advertised a series of positions ranging from data center planning engineers to senior operations and delivery managers, alongside roles focused on AI agents and developer tools.

The hiring push comes as Chinese media reports suggest DeepSeek has raised external capital for the first time, attracting investment from technology giants including Tencent and Alibaba. The AI startup has reportedly brought in about 50 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), giving it a valuation of about 350 billion yuan. The company has not publicly confirmed the reported valuation or financing.

The new positions nevertheless offer a glimpse into how the company intends to deploy fresh capital if funding is secured: investing heavily in computing infrastructure while expanding its portfolio of AI applications.

Building out computing infrastructure

Among the most notable vacancies is a newly listed position for an Internet Data Center (IDC) design and planning engineer, a role typically associated with the development of large-scale data center facilities.

According to the job description, the position would oversee the full lifecycle of infrastructure projects, including site selection, facility design, construction planning and deployment. The role also offers the opportunity to participate in infrastructure projects ranging from megawatt- to gigawatt-scale facilities.

The recruitment drive has fueled speculation that DeepSeek is preparing to build and operate more of its own computing infrastructure rather than relying solely on third-party providers.

The company has also been hiring for positions linked to a computing center in Ulanqab, a city in China’s northern region of Inner Mongolia that has become a major hub for data centers thanks to its relatively cool climate and access to renewable energy resources.

Openings for senior operations engineers and delivery managers suggest that parts of the facility may already be moving into the deployment and operational phase.

The expansion reflects a broader trend across the AI industry as developers seek greater control over the hardware and infrastructure needed to train and run increasingly sophisticated models.

As AI systems grow larger, access to computing power has become one of the industry’s most important competitive advantages. Building and operating data centers directly can help companies manage costs, secure access to scarce resources and optimize facilities for AI workloads.

DeepSeek’s job postings describe modern data centers as evolving beyond traditional server facilities into large industrial systems designed to support AI training and inference at scale, underscoring the company’s focus on long-term computing capacity.

Push into developer tools

At the same time, DeepSeek appears to be accelerating efforts to commercialize its models through software products aimed at developers.

Recent additions to the company’s careers page include openings for an Agent Harness product manager and an Agent Harness research and development engineer.

Further evidence of the initiative emerged when senior DeepSeek researcher Deli Chen publicly called for recruits to help build a “Code Harness” product from scratch. In social media posts, Chen said the project would benchmark itself against Claude Code, the AI-assisted programming tool developed by Anthropic.

The move suggests DeepSeek is seeking to extend its reach beyond foundation models and into the developer tools ecosystem, an increasingly important battleground for AI companies.

As underlying model capabilities begin to converge, software products that integrate AI into programmers’ daily workflows are widely viewed as a key mechanism for attracting users and building long-term ecosystems.

The market is already crowded with offerings such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot, but demand for AI coding assistants continues to grow rapidly as enterprises experiment with integrating generative AI into software development.

DeepSeek’s decision to dedicate resources to a coding-focused agent platform indicates that the company sees application-layer products as a crucial path toward monetization.

From research lab to commercial platforms

The hiring campaign also hints at a broader organizational shift.

Positions such as delivery managers typically play a critical role in implementing technology solutions for corporate customers, suggesting DeepSeek may be preparing to engage more aggressively with enterprise clients.

That would mark an evolution from the company’s earlier profile as a research-driven AI developer backed largely by the resources of quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer, founded by DeepSeek chief executive Liang Wenfeng.

For years, DeepSeek was unusual among leading AI startups in relying primarily on internal funding rather than outside investors. If reports of a large fundraising round prove accurate, the company would gain substantial resources to expand both its infrastructure footprint and product portfolio.

Taken together, the latest recruitment activity points to a company pursuing a dual-track strategy: investing in the physical foundations of AI through computing infrastructure while simultaneously developing commercial products designed to turn model capabilities into revenue-generating services.

Whether through data centers in Inner Mongolia or coding agents aimed at developers, DeepSeek appears to be positioning itself for a more expansive role in China’s rapidly evolving AI sector.
